Valentines Day
The history of Valentine’s Day is shrouded in mystery and speculation.
Going as far back as we can go, Valentine’s Day falls in the middle of the Ancient Roman fertility festival known as Lupercalia. The name comes from two Saints, Valentine of Terni and Valentine of Rome, both said to have been martyred on 14th February, although most believe this embellishment was added much later.
So where did the romantic notion of Valentine’s Day come from?
We can see the connection with the Romans’ fertility festival, but the two Saint Valentines were murdered? Honestly, I don’t think anyone will ever know! The first evidence of a link between Romance and St Valentine’s Day came in the form of a poem written in 1382 to commemorate the engagement of King Richard II and his Queen Anne. From there, it has developed into the holiday to celebrate love and romance. By 1601 it is so established that William Shakespeare even mentions it in Hamlet!
An estimated 224 MILLION roses are grown for this single day of the year!
Honestly, the history of the day, while very intriguing and interesting, is not as important as what the day stands for to us. A day dedicated to showing those you love how much you care is nothing short of magical for us – that the day is symbolised by flowers is just an added bonus!
